U.S. Supports Anti-Corruption Training

With support from the U.S. Embassy the State Inspection and Anti-Corruption Authority (SIAA) and American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) conducted a training workshop for trainers about preventing and combating corruption on March 14 in Vientiane.  Seventy-seven Lao government officials from 37 different ministries and organizations attended the five-day workshop. Mr. Xaikham Ounmixai, Vice President of State Inspection and Anti-Corruption Authority of the Lao PDR and Ms. Kimberley Bulkley, Director of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) Section, U.S. Embassy Vientiane opened the workshop.

This workshop consists of a series of trainings for the State Inspection and Anti-Corruption Authority to assist them in applying the amended law on Anti-Corruption 2005 and relevant laws and treaties that prevent and reduce corruption in the Lao PDR.  The training was delivered by Mr. Peter Ritchie, Senior Anti-Corruption Advisor, ABA ROLI and several key Lao officials from State Inspection and Anti-Corruption Authority, the Office of Supreme Prosecutor, and the Bank of the Lao PDR.  The participants learned about the financial crime elements of the UN convention against Corruption as well as systems and skills to detect and investigate financial crime and asset recovery.
